FABRICATION

Small Scale(1:10) prototypes of the cornerstones were cast in sand, experimenting with different aggregate mixtures and concrete coloration using Iron oxide and Copper oxide.

Each cornerstone had a diameter of 14 in. and a height of 8 in.. The mold for the cornerstones was made of silicone rubber so as to have a reusable mold that could create more consistent replicas of the form. Each cornerstone was colored a Reddish-brown using a mixture of natural colorants and Latex Paint. A penetrating oil finish was applied to seal the concrete and prevent it from damage.

Ridge posts(Dae-gong) take on different shapes, from the most simplistic forms of straight wooden beams, trapezoids, or a half circle, to more superfluous designs ornamented with the patterns of flowers, clouds, or other natural objects. The design of the ridge post and wedges for the structure were inspired from the shape of vines in Korean patterns.

The white pine used for the ridge posts was cut into slabs and glued to make multiple boards. The engraved patterns on the wood were made using a combination of the CNC machine, router, and chisel. The outlines of the posts were cut using a jig saw and carved using an angle grinder. The wood was then smoothened using a microplane and rasp.

The wood was thermal treated to ensure protection in outdoor environments. After torching & polishing the wood, 2 coats of wood wax were applied as a sealer.

All joinery was fabricated with a combination of power tools and hand tools.
